Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope

From September 15 through October 15, SJC faculty and students celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring the diversity and contributions of the Hispanic community with different activities during classes and club activities, and by hosting Mexican exchange students, virtually. The theme and celebrations reflect on hope for a better future, as we hold fast to our resilience and faith.
Señor Pier and his Spanish 3 class are leading a virtual exchange pilot program with Universidad La Salle in Mexico through November where students can witness Mexican culture and share their own stories in the targeted language. Over the summer, Spanish 3 and Heritage classes began reading the novel Frida Kahlo by Cristy Placido and studying the contribution of Hispanic women as strong leaders of the community. Heritage 1, 2, and Honors Spanish classes are participating in a weeklong jigsaw activity and identity lesson, "Vitas Impactantes," which includes research of famous Hispanic biographies.
The Latino Student Union supports SJC's inclusive community by celebrating and promoting diversity during the month of La Herencia Hispana. Mrs. Rosemary Martin, the Latino Student Union moderator, said, "I am excited for the union's future plans of hosting career speaker meetings, empowerment sessions, and bilingual parent meetings."
Mia Graham '23, member of the SJC student newspaper, The Sabre, interviewed Mrs. Nahas and Mrs. Toquica for an article related to Hispanic Heritage, and the influence of Hispanics in the community. Don't forget the "El Cha, Cha, Cha" Spanish and Latin Club led by Señora Guerra! The first meeting is scheduled for October 13, where they will open the season with Latin music and Hispanic food. All students are welcome!
